Berlin United Methodist Church's 1st Annual Pie and Ice Cream Sale will be held on August 10th, Noon-4pm during the Car Show.

We need your help!

1.) We are looking for 50 fruit pies to be donated.
*TIP - to get it done early, bake now and freeze. Take them out of your freezer on Saturday August 9th to thaw and bring them to church on Sunday morning.
2.) You can help with Setup, in the Kitchen, Selling, and Clean-up on August 10th too!
3.) We also need Cash Donations needed for supplies (write PIE SUPPLIES on your offering envelope between now and August 3rd).

Berlin UMC Upcoming Event ... Sunday Service at Lake Lucerne August 17th

Reminder that the Sunday Service at Lake Lucerne August 17th, 2008 ... we will be taking a bus or carpooling in order to get over. It's a 10:30am service, so we'd meet at the Berlin church parking lot earlier ... and there would be no regular service at Berlin then.

Berlin UMC Going Green Tip 07/13/2008

Green Car Washes? Doing it at home might be cheaper and handier, but it’s nearly always better to go to the commercial car wash. By mixing air and water half and half,
car wash businesses use 60 percent less water in the entire process than
you use just rinsing off your car!
U.S. commercial car washes are also required to send their used water
off for treatment, or to take other measures that lessen the impact of
their discharge. Some of them even reuse their water.
Home washes, on the other hand, waste approximately 116 gallons of
water, which usually drains directly to storm sewers, eventually
emptying into streams, lakes, rivers, or bays, adversely affecting our
fish friends and their habitat.

When you go out to eat at a restaurant, take a small, reusable container
with you to bring home leftovers. That way, you won’t need to use a less
eco-friendly disposable container from the restaurant.

Reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. Even if you
recycle it, resources are still used in the transportation and recycling
process. Some tips include ...



Register online with the Mail Preference Service at
www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglist. It costs a dollar, but should
significantly reduce the junk mail you receive.



To keep from getting credit card offers, call 888-5-OPTOUT (888-567-8688).
You will be connected to a recorded message that will prompt you for your
full name, address, telephone number and Social Security Number. Choose
option 3 to have your name removed permanently, or choose option 1 to have
your name removed for just two years.

Driving Tips

1.) clean out the junk in your trunk (lighter load)

2.) check tire inflation (better gas mileage)

3.) leave early and don't rush (better gas mileage)

4.) avoid drive-thrus (idle time)

5.) avoid parallel parking (takes longer)

6.) park in the shade (to minimize use of air conditioner)

7.) drive less

This season, think about leaving grass clippings on the ground
instead of bagging them. This can save on the number of bags used to
dispose grass clippings, as well as chemical fertilizers. "The average home with four thousand square feet of lawn can reduce fertilizer requirements by 25 percent, or about 3 pounds per year, by leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. It takes more than a gallon of diesel fuel to make three pounds of fertilizer." Do some Grass-cycling!!!

The environmentally friendly picnic may include ...



- stay close in order to drive less



- use re-usabled utensils, napkins, containers, etc.



- reycle the bottles and cans you used



- buy locally grown fresh foods



- take your garbage with you, don't leave it at the picnic area



- don't let your pets and kids play on /run on / destroy natural habitats



- take nature books and binoculars and study and learn about nature



- use the natural bug repellent we talked about in a previous post

Place a filled water bottle in your toilet tank to save water each time you
flush. The average toilet "uses three to seven gallons per flush. A bottle
in the tank will displace enough water to save half a gallon to a gallon
each use, or up to about 10 gallons a day in the typical home."

Natural Insect Repellents



Some oils known for their insect offending scents
include tea tree, eucalyptus, cedar, peppermint, and lavender. Many of these have a fragrance many people find appealing.
To build a mixture Add approximately 1-2 oz of your chosen oil to a 12 or 16 oz spray bottle. Add water and
swirl.
Also some stores now stock many effective natural repellents that
make use of citronella, a popular, non-toxic, essential oil extracted
from the leaves and stems of a grass species that has strong bug
discouraging properties, and a fresh citrus scent.

Save time and energy by not using the button to automatically open the door, if
you're not handicapped. Remember too that these doors often open quite slowly and thus you save time opening it yourself too!

Make sure to turn the faucet all the way off so it doesn’t drip. If the
faucet is dripping because it's broken, make sure it gets fixed. In
addition to being costly, a dripping faucet will waste thousands of gallons
of water, causing further strain on a resource that is not infinite.



"If your faucet is dripping at a rate of one drop per second, you can
expect to waste 2,700 gallons of water per year, which adds to the cost of
water and sewer utilities, or strain your septic tank."

UMW Going Green!

The United Methodist Women decided in the April meeting to reduce the use of Styrofoam cups adn plates at future events. At Food and Fellowship, ceramic cups will be used. At potlucks, participants are encouraged to bring their own table service. We invite and encourage other groups that sponsor food and fellowship and potluck events at church to adopt this practice also.

Easter Celebration March 22nd 2pm

When: Saturday March 22nd 2pm

What: Our March Fellowship is going to be an Easter Celebration on March 22 at 2:00pm. During this celebration we will do an art project, watch a puppet performance, and have an egg hunt. This is not only going to be for our church families children and guests, but we are sending an invitation out to other churches in Berlin. We hope that we will have a great turn out. When plans become more concrete, we will need help to make our Easter Celebration run smoothly. Please let Micky Miller or Sue Stumpner know if you are willing to help, or have an idea.

Church and all after-church events have been cancelled on 02/17/2008 due to icy roads.

Spread the Love Feb 10th after Worship

Help your church family "Spread the Love" on Feburary 10th after Worship by participating in this great fellowship event. You can help by signing up to bring food for the potluck dinner. You can help by signing up a person's name who would then get a letter of love from the church family (this could be anybody, including homebound members, troops, college students, those who are ill, or those who just need some love sent to them during this Valentine's Day season. And of course, you can help on Sunday February 10th by actually sitting down and writing a letter! Kids are welcome too, as they will be able to help with some creative Valentine's ideas too!
